Is a Woman:

An Exhibition

Women in the Visual Arts
An Exhibit at the Aargauer Kunsthaus

August 2022 to January 2023

Elisabeth Bronfen is curating an exhibition for the Aargauer Kunsthaus devoted to the female artists in the collection.

Offering an opportunity to revisit the art-historical canon, it takes at its starting point the collector Andreas Züst’s permanent loan, as well as other holdings. The exhibition sheds light on the relationship between visual art and sexual difference in modern and post-modern art, and exposes points of connection between the generations.

The show renders visible the impact of classic modernism on late twentieth-century female artists. These works from the 1970s to the 1990s, in turn, also draw into focus the feminist legacy of the collection of the Aargauer Kunsthaus.

The exhibition will feature works by the artists Miriam Cahn, Dorothy Iannone, Manon, Meret Oppenheim, and Ilse Weber, among others.
